What's up 8th!!!!!

Well I went and got the new buddyclub short shifter assembly and decided to post up a review with a few pics and my thoughts.

Let me start off by saying I've had the TWM replacement as well as the mugen qs and I will be comparing this to both of them as well as stock.

With all the shifters I've used I've always had hybrid base bushings and cable bushings so take that into consideration when reading this please.

First off i would like to thank Rob at robear racing for all his help and going above and beyond with his customer service. I suggested that if you decide to purchase this shifter you should definitely go to Rob and robear. Mainly considering he is a sponsor on here for a long time and is prob one of the chillest guys I've ever met.

Ok so hopefully he dosent mind me using his pic because with all my excitement I forgot to take a pic of the shifter by itself before the pics comparing to stock and before I installed it.

As far as the comparison to stock I really feel that there isnt one. The shifter does sit up about an inch higher than stock but that dosent bug me like I thought it would. The shifts are extremely smooth and I have had absolutely no problems getting into any gear at all. With my stock shifter I would have issues with getting it into first and third for some reason.

Here are a couple pics I took next to the stock assembly.

As you can see the lower arm is longer than stock and the shift arm itself is taller.

Next is comparing this to mugen qs.

The mugen was my favorite shifter until now. My shifts were smooth and I didn't have any notchy feeling. Now that I've tried this I feel that this one is actually a better replacement. Either way you look at it as far as either cost or performance I believe imo that this is better for both. I feel that this shifter gives more defined shifts and not notchy at all. It's very smooth and easy to get into any gear fast. As far as price its also cheaper so its a win win situation.

Next is comparing this to the TWM full assembly.

Ok so here is the kicker. The TWM is definitely a shorter throw but you should know that just by reading the throw percentages on each. The TWM also sits really really low which is what I really loved about the TWM. The only issue I ever had with the TWM was I sometimes would have a really hard time getting into gears when I would be stopped or just cruising. I think it was mainly just due to less leverage with how low the shifter was or maybe how short the throw was. I am in no way bashing the TWM assembly. I just enjoy being able to get into gears very easy and the smooth feeling I get from buddyclub is amazing. The buddyclub obviously sits about 2" or maybe more higher than the TWM. BUT now that I've tried this I can see why race cars have taller shifters because its SO much easier to get into gear. Also of course this buddyclub shifter is more than half the price of the TWM makes it a win for me. I was a bit scared since I really liked the way the TWM sat that I would hate the height of this buddyclub but I was completely wrong.

Just to summarize

PROS:
Nice crisp shifting
No need to force into any gear
Half the price of TWM even though the throw isn't as short.
Cheaper than the mugen qs which is what I would compare this to be closest to but I feel that this is a shorter throw than the mugen.

Cons:
For those that like the shorter shifters this is taller so definitely take that into consideration.
But remember what I said and some others have said. There is a reason race cars have taller shifters.
The only other thing that kind of bugs me is I have a Blox 490 knob and on my stock shifter the emblem on the top was straight. When I tightened down my knob on this one its crooked so I will have to look for a locking nut to make it straight. Or get a knob with no emblem or shift pattern.

That's about it guys and gals. Here is a pic of it installed but beware I ripped my shift boot trying to get it to stretch up to the bottom of the knob.....lol. so I guess its time to make a new one. Also my car is crazy dirty from the couple road trips i took last week so dont judge please... I was too excited to install this before I cleaned my car out.

Once again I really want to thank Rob at robear racing though. I will be taking all my business to him from this point on just because of the great customer service I received and how great my experience was. THANKS ROB!!!!!!!!!!!!

You're very welcome. No problem at all. I was actually in the hospital saturday and Sunday for some health issues or I would have done it sooner. But either way its done now....lol.

Thank you for taking the times out of your schedule to make this review.

Hmmm, it look like you might be able to use a short shifter adapter to pair up with the Buddy Club short shifter for an even shorter throw.
Again you're very welcome.
I was actually thinking the same thing about the adapter but unfortunately I sold my twm one before I could test it out. Also the white plastic pieces on mine wrap all around the knob instead of the blue ones like the stock assembly has so they might be harder to get off.

Also guys this is my first real review so sorry if I rambled a little....lol. just wanted to give as much info as possible.

Yes definitely cant beat the price. The hybrid looks amazing as well but I don't feel like messing with adjustments. And its double the cost which not everyone can afford. Fortunately i was lucky to be able to have a twm and a mugen shifter before when money was good but there is no way I could put out that kind of cash at the moment or maybe even the near future so I feel like this is my far the best bang for your buck.

Yes i agree. Also it looks like the assembly is shaved down pretty good at that point so I'm sure it would work. If I ever see an adapter on here for cheap again I will definitely try it out just to see the difference. I just don't want to go buy a new one to find out that it dosent work or something.

Yeah you could say that. My suggestion is to get a low profile knob like twm has or something similar. But I've been driving around pretty much all night and I'm starting to really like the height overall. It seems so much easier to shift. This is prob one of the most smooth shifter out of the others I've tried.. the mugen was very close but this one feels like butter.. its crazy how smooth it is.

I had the Skunk2 adapter thing... I totally agree, I love the way this shifter feels smooth and solid and i dont get that binding feeling i got from the adapter goin from first to second and the height is cool with me the less distance between the steering wheel and the shifter the better. Great mod and fairly cheap mod

So does it actually feel like ~40% reduction? I'm running HR bushings and a shift extender with a CTR knob on my stock 09 shifter.

I will be installing the buddy club shifter with aluminum base bushings and all of the aforementioned bits.

I'm pretty excited. I've never had a short shifter before. Is the throw of this shifter shorter than the adapters?

Thanks. All the adapter I've felt have been pretty notchy, that's why I've never put one in my car (and it's an 09). My shifter will be super tall because of the extender, but I like it very close to the steering wheel. It's in there with the stock shifter now and it doesn't feel like that far of a shift. Lol.

Just to add to the review itself. I've been driving around more than normal the last couple days just trying out the shifter and seeing if there is anything else I can add.

Well today I took a small road trip down about an hour away and I wanted to see how shifting was getting on the fwy and punching it. It was amazing. It went straight into every gear with no issues or any unnecessary force. Also with my stock shifter and the twm I would sometimes have trouble getting into third without having to force it a little. I don't know if its because of the length of the shifter or that combined with it being straight instead of curved like the stock assembly but third gear is one of the easiest gears to get into now. It pretty much just falls don't into place. I love it.

Thank you. I'm glad it helped. I've actually got a lot of responses on this review and it seems like more people pulled the trigger and purchased after I posted this up which i think is awesome because its well worth the money in my opinion. Like I said it is higher than stock but I'm complety used to it now and absolutely love it. I'm just hesitating now on getting a new shift knob but I really want a white one and I can't afford to spend the high price on the twm unfortunately. I wish valor was still selling knobs because I completely regret selling mine now.

Bought this short shifter with twm bushings. Excellent set up! Not the shortest throw ever but it feels fantastic! No slop whatsoever! As for your knob dilemma this is what I did... View attachment 53339
It has a great weight (little more than stock) and it was relatively cheap. It's an ICB knob I stripped down and rattle can painted then sprayed several times with clear. Finishing touch is the rallye red numbers I used touch up paint for lol. Been driving with it like this for a month now. Doesn't seem to be fading at all. Not sure where you're from but I get bored and would have no problem making another one. I got nothing but time lol

Just installed mine today. The only thing that bothers me is that shifter cable clips don't fully click back into the assembly the way they do in the stock piece. I realize this is likely why they included the metal gate pieces, but my OCD is eating at me a little over it even though it likely will have no negative effects.

#28 ·
I actually didnt have that problem with mine at all. I didn't even install the metal clips because they went in perfect. But we all know that every product may not be the exact same because of obvious flaws in production with all companies.

But on a side note I did have that issue with my twm when I had it and I drove for a good year with no problems so try and control the OCD and tell it everything will be fine........lol. But really you shouldn't have any issues with that bud. Have you test drove for a little while yet? If so how do you like the shifting? It would be great to have as many opinions as possible from everyone so people know what to expect since I guess this is the only full review thread.

Just took it for a spin. It isn't bad. Your review hit the nail on the head. The taller height definitely creates smoother gear transitions especially with my twm A6. Worth the money for sure, but I feel it's mainly just a good alternative to stock with bolt on extenders for height and throw. Kids looking for the cool factor of the twm v2 or upcoming hybrid likely won't be happy. Also, I measured the shaft and compared it to my stock shifter w/ twm extension. The lengths are almost exactly the same. The base bushings seem softer too, creating a little more slop, but nothing I can't deal with.

I definitely suggest the hybrid bushings to go with this shifter. I had the twm bushings on my mugen and twm then switched to hybrid on both and actually liked them better believe it or not. Both bushings are solid but the hybrid ones felt just a little more. I noticed that on the twm assembly the most actually.......lol.

To be honest I don't know.....lol. I make my own boots and make them long enough to stand straight up against my knob so for people that have regular boots and such I would guess they would need a ring or something that would be small enough to go around the part where the threads end.
